Acquiring knowledge is essential for successful improvement or transformation in an business. Our approach include four parts:
Systems Theory. Because most products and services result form a complex system of interaction among people, procedures, and equipment, it is vital to understand the properties of a system. Importantly, if each part of a system, considered separately, decides to operate as efficiently as possible, then the system as a whole will not operate to maximum effectiveness - Management's function here is to orchestrate the system, that is the efforts of all business components.
Understanding Variation. Everting we observe or measure varies - and business are force to make decisions based on interpretation of this variation - common cause and special cause. Business operation that are impacted by only common cause variation as stable process and in statistical control, whereas those impacted by common and special cause variation are unstable process and unpredictable. Identifying and removing special cause of variation, and tracking the process performance over time determines if a change has eliminated the special cause. Improvements or transformation is only successful when they address the root causes of variation in business operations that create products of services.
Building Knowledge. The more knowledge one has about how a system functions or could function, the greater the likelihood that change will result in improvement. Skilfully building knowledge by making changes and observing the results is the foundation for improvement and transformation.
Human-Centred-Design. Understanding the human side of change is critical, as people usually have some reaction to change - from total commitment to open hostility, as they will be concerned about how change affects them. Recognising this, and addressing these concerns is part of the human-centred design of any business improvement or transformation:
